Heat stroke: prevention and fast action while traveling

Diseases and Treatments, First Aid, Health and Wellness, Prevention

In any geographic area where there’s high humidity and extreme heat, your health can be at risk. One of the most serious heat-related emergencies is heat stroke, which can be life-threatening if action isn’t taken quickly.
Here’s how to recognize it, what to do in the moment, how to prevent it, and when to seek urgent medical care.

What is heat stroke?
Heat stroke is a medical emergency in which the body temperature rises to 104 °F (40 °C) or higher because the body loses its ability to cool itself. This can cause damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and other organs.
It can happen after prolonged exposure to the sun (classic heat stroke) or after intense physical activity in hot environments (exertional heat stroke).

How to recognize heat stroke

  • Body temperature of 104 °F (40 °C) or higher
  • Skin that is hot and dry or excessive sweating (depending on the type of heat stroke)
  • Severe headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion, disorientation, or unusual behavior
  • Rapid pulse and fast breathing
  • Loss of consciousness

What to do if someone has heat stroke

  • Call emergency services or use Kipcalm for immediate medical assistance.
  • Move the person to a cool, well-ventilated place.
  • Remove excess clothing.
  • Apply cold compresses to the neck, armpits, and groin, or use fans.
  • Do not give fluids if the person is unconscious or disoriented.

When to see a healthcare professional
If you suspect heat stroke, always seek medical attention immediately—even if symptoms seem to improve. Hospital treatment may include IV fluids and advanced temperature control.

How to prevent heat stroke while traveling

  • Drink fluids regularly, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing, and a hat or cap.
  • Avoid outdoor activities between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
